News and ProjectsOur E-Newsletter, Inner Access, is published every 3 months. To see what we’ve done in the past, see archived editions on the left of this page. High School OutreachCDF will continue outreach to high schools under the “ My body, My Future” Project which targets high school children. CDF goes into high school personal development classes to inform youth about the dangers of commercial sexual exploitation and how to avoid getting trapped in it. We also help students understand the benefits of setting goals for their lives, including the benefits of sexual purity and how to maintain a pure lifestyle. Primary School OutreachIn primary schools, this year we will continue our “Yell then Tell Campaign” for primary school children. The emphasis is on keeping children safe. We help them to recognize situations that may lead to sexual abuse and/or exploitation, and help them with strategies for escape from and reporting of abuse. Volunteer TrainingCDF trains volunteers called (Family Intervention Specialists) who can assist us in outreaches and workshops as trainers. We also provide volunteers with skills to be able to work with families and victims in their communities. CDF is collaborating with Mr. Tom Sharp and the Belize Bible Center to provide counseling training for volunteers. Community OutreachThis year CDF will launch the project - “Building Healthy Communities.” We will be using a community development model to build capacity in one local community where children are at risk for CSEC. The model will later be scaled up to other communities. August, 2011 - Sensitization for Orange Walk and CorozalA total of 130 youths and children were sensitized on CSEC and CSEC related issues on Friday, August 19. It is important to note that Orange Walk and Corozal are close to the border between Belize and Mexico. With much traffic across the border, youths and children in that area are vulnerable to perpetrators. CDF partnered with Pastor Antoinette to bring awareness on the issue of CSEC and the importance of our youths and children being aware of what is a form of modern day slavery. July, 2011 - Youth Sensitization in Esperanza VillageA total of 30 youths were sensitized on CSEC and CSEC related issues on Friday, July 29. The youths who attended this training now have an understanding of CSEC, the issues victims face, and the medical and social consequences to victims. Youths were encouraged to challenge other youths and spread the word of CSEC and the importance of purity to others. Read more in this month newsletter.
July, 2011 - Church Sensitization WorkshopOn July 30, CDF collaborated with a team of medical doctors and nurses to help sensitize church leaders on the growing issue of sexual exploitation and abuse in Belize. Read more in our upcoming newsletter.
June, 2011 - United Evergreen Primary School Student sensitizedWe had another opportunity to talk to students at United Evergreen Primary School. A total number of 125 students from the standard 4, 5, and 6 classes had the opportunity to learn more about their body and how to protect themselves from abusers. Read more in this month newsletter. June, 2011 - Valley of Peace Community Sensitized110 Community members and over 250 students were sensitized on June 25 and June 27. CDF partnered with a Medical team and Students from the US to do this community sensitization. The medical team did different free medical checkups and CDF talked about abuse and how as parents they can protect their children from perpetrators. Students were taught about how to get help by yelling and telling. We believe that God used this to sensitization to pierce the hearts of those that heard this message.
June, 2011 - Meeting with Pastors in BenqueCDF met with some pastors from the Benque community and personally invite them and their congregation to the upcoming community sensitization. Thanks to Pastor Cano from the Nazarene Church for allowing us to use his church as the venue for upcoming Benque Sensitization training. May, 2011 - Step of Faith SensitizationOver thirty youths from Step of Faith Church in Belmopan were sensitized about sexual exploitation. CDF Chairperson Ms Diana Shaw challenged the young generation to live a pure life and make goals that will help them to be successful. Read more in our upcoming newsletter. May, 2011 - Radio Talk Show on Radio Vision in BenqueCDF had the opportunity to meet with the director of Radio Vision in Benque.Our meeting was very productive and CDF was given the opportunity to be on the mid- morning talk show on May 23, 2011 for two hours to talk about the situation of exploitation in Belize:Who are the perpetrators? What help is available for victims?What can you as parents, teachers, and community leaders do to help eradicate this fast growing industry? Read more about this in our upcoming newsletter. May, 2011 - Donation from Austrailian High CommissionThe Austrailian High Commission in Trinidad and Tobago has donated BZ $6,400to help cover the cost of trainings that CDF will be doing. The funds donated will help cover the cost of trainings which include school sensitizations, media campaigns, and community sensitizations in Valley of Peace, Las Flores, and other Spanish communities in the Cayo District. May, 2011 - “A Day for Children Rights” Hosted by the Mexican EmbassyThe Mexican Embassy of Belize invited CDF to attend their first sensitization training on CSEC and photo exhibition to promote the rights of children and to sensitize individuals on sexual exploitation.Read more in our upcoming newsletter. May, 2011 - Donation from Atlantic BankAtlantic Bank has donated $ 300.00 to CDF to help cover cost of training materials and other CDF activities. May, 2011 - School Sensitization at Belmopan Baptist High SchoolOver 350 students from first to fourth form were sensitized about CSEC and human trafficking in Belize. CDF trainers also challenged the students to set goals for their lives that will help them to be better citizens. The students were also challenged to avoid sexual activities that will lead to STD’S that will destroy their goals in life. CDF would like thank the principal and staff for graciously allowing us to use 45 minutes of their classes. April 29, 2011 - CDF Collaboration with Vision RadioCollaboration with Vision Radio- Vision Radio which is located on the Benque Road is a Belizean own Christian radio Station that covers a range from St. Matthews Village, all of the Cayo District including Benque and parts of Guatemala. We had a chance to meet with the directors of Vision Radio who have agreed to help with a sensitization training schedule for July 8 & 9. Read more in our upcoming newsletter. CDF will be collaborating with HEPFDC to do a health fair in Armenia Village in June April 01, 2011 - CDF has also grown this monthApril 1st - hiring of a field officer and office assistant March 25, 2011 - Sensitization at St Ignacious High School ExtensionSensitization at St Ignacious High School Extension which provides second chance education opportunities those who did not complete high school due to due to pregnancy, exploitation of other setbacks. March 23 to March 24- 60 sensitize at Our Lady of Guadeloupe High School and March 28 to April 1st - 750 students at Belmopan Comprehensive High School sensitize. The response from students and the interest that was showed at the trainings was a big encouragement for us to continue doing sensitization training with other high schools in the Cayo area. March 22, 2011 - Interview on Open Your EyesOn March 22, 2011, Ms. Diana Shaw and Ms. Verlie Lamb were invited to appear on “ Open Your Eyes” to talk about CSEC and Trafficking and the work of CDF. “Open Your Eyes” is a nationally syndicated talk show that addresses current events and news items in Belize. This is our second appearance on the show and we always look forward to opportunities to sensitize the wider public read more in our newsletter. March, 2011 - March is being celebrated as international women monthThe month of March is being celebrated as international women month, there have been several ongoing activates in Belize celebrating women. Here at CDF we set this month aside to do a number of sensitization training which includes going into High schools to talk to young men and women between the ages of 13 to 19. We have sensitized a total of 862 High School students. March, 2011 - Sensitization TrainingMarch 18 & 19 CDF will sensitize women in the Cayo District on CSEC. Read more about this in our upcoming Newsletter for this month. Belmopan Comprehensive High School Principal Mr. Guzman agreed for CDF to do sensitization training for students from 1st to 4th form this Month (March). CDF will also be targeting other High Schools in Belmopan, Media House’s throughout the Country and Youth Ministry in the Cayo District. We are available to do training at any Youth Ministry located in Cayo District. Please feel free to give us a call if you would like us to sensitize your youths on this issue February 19, 2011 - First Men SeminarCDF hosted its first Men Seminar to target men and young men on the issues of sexual exploitation and human trafficking. This seminar was held on Saturday February 19 at Western Christian Academy, In Ontario Village, Cayo District. A total of 80 men and young men attended this seminar. Topics discuss were:

January 14th - 15th, 2011 - Family Intervention Specialists Training Part 3 & 4"I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy." -Psalm 140:12 To start off the New Year we had our first Training for family Intervention Specialists on the 14 &15 of January. Read more on this in our upcoming Newsletter January 24, 2011 - Media Committee MeetingTechnology is one of the fastest growing industries in the entire world. The Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children is also becoming one of the fastest growing industry and third world countries are the number one targets for perpetrators. The average person watch 26- 28 hours of T.V per week, this would be a good audience to target in bringing sensitization to the issues of CSSE. CDF met with its media committee to discuss ways to sensitize and educate Belizean on issues relating to CSEC and trafficking and how to get young people involved in this campaign. December 2nd - 3rd, 2010 - Labour and Trade Union TrainingOur Last training for 2010 was held on the 2 & 3 of December for Labour and Trade Union Officials country -wide. We were grateful for the opportunity bestowed on us by the Labour Commissioner Mr. Williams and the Presidents of the various Trade Union who participated in the said training. There were a total of 27 participants at this 2 day workshop. Participants were sensitized on the role and responsibilities of Labour Officers and the Trade Unions in eradicating CSEC as well as their legal responsibilities to victims. In addition, the Labour Commissioner presented the National Child Labour Policy and the Decent Work Agenda both have been approved by Parliament and they place a responsibility on the Labour Department to take legal responsibility to detect and investigate possible situations of CSEC encountered during labour inspections. October, 2010 - Customs and Immigration Training 2010We are please to say that we were able to sensitize 27 Migration Officials on the growing issues of Trafficking and Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in Belize. The information presented showed how important the Officers at the said training were sensitized on the following issues. How to detect and investigate CSEC and trafficking
October 23, 2010 - Second Training for FISSo far, we have had two trainings for willing volunteers to work with CDF as Family Intervention Specialists, we had our second Training October 23 in Camalote Village. Although Hurricane Richard was less than 24 hours away and preparation for this was needed we saw the heart of volunteers that were committed to work with victims of abuse and exploitation and to bring healing to victims.
September 18, 2010 - 11 sign up to work with CDF as Family Intervention Specialist. (FIS)As CDF moves into the next phase of operation, we saw the need to train others about how to deal with victims of exploitation. On September 18 2010, CDF had a meeting for willing participants who had already attended previous sensitization training to discuss the possibilities of becoming FIS. There were a total of twenty in attendance, eleven sign up to become Family Intervention Specialist under CDF. Those who sign up to become FIS will undergo a series of trainings before they are certified to work with CDF (Read more about this in our upcoming News letter) September 2, 2010 - Principals and Managers sensitize on the issues of CSECCayo Association of Principals of Primary Schools held its annual Principals and Mangers meeting on September 2, 2010 at the George Price Center for Peace and Development in Belmopan City. The Executive coordinator invited CDF Chairperson Ms Diana Shaw to sensitize Principals and Managers about the issues of CSEC. At this meeting we discuss the Roles and Responsibilities of Principals in working with the Police and Human Services when dealing with victims of exploitation, How to report and follow up on reported cases of CSEC and how as Principals they play a big role in the welfare and development of students. We receive good feedback from those attended and we are excited about visiting schools in the upcoming year to sensitize students on this issue.
September 20, 2010 - CDF participated in the third annual Christian Parades in Belize.Every year on the Eve of Belize’s Independence, Christian churches participate in a Christian Parade called taking back the land. With the participation of Pastors, leaders and church members whose responsibility is to show case a float in the parade. They were several floats on display which includes: Noah and Ark, The Glory of the lord on Mount Sinai, The New Jerusalem, The creation of Man and several others. Churches march from Roaring Creek around the ring road to the Assembly building in Belmopan for about two hours in celebration of Belize’s independence. The Child foundation participated with Ontario Christian Community Church in the Float decoration. We displayed CDF in an artistic format with writing and painting about what we do, and how to contact us if you or someone one you know is a victim of exploitation. The parade ended at midnight with fireworks and a speech by the Minister John Saldeva. October 6th, 2010 - Preschool Teachers TrainingThe age of 3 to 5 is the most significant stage of a child’s life. They learn from what they see others do. Although The Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children might not be happing at the age of 3 to 5 our goal is to sensitize the general public on the issues related to CSEC. Over the past three Months we have been focusing on sensitizing Teachers and Students. So far we have train Principals, Primary Schools Teachers and our latest training were to over 65 Preschool Teachers representing 25 different Preschools, on October 6th at the George Price Center For Peace and Development in Belmopan City.
August 25th, 2010 - Chair Person Speaks about CSEC; Hosted by Prime Minister Wife.On August 25 the first lady of Belize, Kim Simplis Barrow hosted a national Symposium on the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children. Mrs. Barrow is Special Envoy for women and children. Attending this symposium were: Prime Minister Dean Barrow; Chief Magistrate, Belize Family Court, Bishop Phillip Wright; Minister of Human Development and Social Transformation, Honorable Eden Martinez; Representatives of National Committee for Families and Children, Labor Department, Members of the Police Department, Belize Tourism Board, Social Workers, business places and other organizations. The Child Development Foundation founder and chair person Diana Shaw was a part of the technical presenters at this symposium and the only local speaker. At the end of this Symposium Mrs. Barrow made it clear that she would do whatever she can to put a stop to commercial sexual exploitation in Belize. Until then CDF will continue to equip and sensitize the public on CSEC. For more information please read our newsletter. August 18, 2010- 120 Government Teachers Sensitization. 134 in attendanceTeachers throughout Belize have been busy with workshops and getting their classrooms ready so students could have a great school year. Teachers play such a vital role in the development of students. On August 18, 120 government teachers in the Cayo District were sensitized on CSEC. The remaining 14 were from Cayo Christian Academy in Ontario Village.
August 9th, 10th- 2010- Barlow Girl met CDF Chair Person and discussed the vision of CDFWe had the opportunity to share the vision of CDF with one of America’s top girl bands. Barlow Girl visited Belize to help with Operation Christmas Child, a Christian organization that gives gift boxes to those that are less fortunate. This was another favorable opportunity that CDF was grateful for. August 3rd, 4th 2010 -Youth CampPurity is such a big deal today. God never intend sex out of marriage. The media today has totally bombarded viewers - 80 percent of which are children and teenagers – with the message that it is ok to have sex. So they have brainwashed the minds of this generation. On August 3rd and 4th we did a two day sensitization at the Baptist Camp Grounds with a little over 50 children and teenagers. We talked about how as young people it is so easy to given in to peer pressure and to fall into believing that you are not valuable. We also gave them different safety methods in protecting themselves from perpetrators, how to help someone that might be a victim, and to take a stand to be different as they go back to school. July 24, 2010On July 24, 2010, we sensitized 50 church leaders in the Cayo District. The purpose for this training was to provide a Biblical foundation that would cause Christians to think as Jesus would; to let them see that the growing issue of CSEC is beyond man’s ability, but with prayers and total dependence on God we are able to fulfill the commission of reaching out to those in need. From this church training we have a total of eight men and women that are willing to help with the counseling of victims, and other church leaders offered to help in any way possible.
June 22 to 28 Police Sensitization TrainingOver 120 police officers were trained on the growing issues of CSEC. Officers from all six districts were trained on how to detect, investigate and protect the rights of victims.
